Buyer's Guide

Pacific Hoods is committed to helping you picking the right hood for your kitchen as this is a long-term investment and will last you for a long time with proper care and maintenance.  There are several factors to consider when picking the right hood:

Step 1: Choose Ducted or Ductless?

  • Ducted Range Hoods vent cooking odors, smoke, grease, and steam out of your house.
  • Ductless Range Hoods use charcoal filters to recirculate and filter the air back into your home.

Ducted kitchen hoods tend to be more efficient for getting rid of cooking odors, smoke, grease, and steam in the cooking area. They are not simply filtering and recirculating the air, but are instead venting it out of the kitchen altogether. That is why at Pacific Hoods, all of our range hoods require ductwork due to its high suction power.

The ideal duct size for our high-CFM hoods is 6” or larger. A smaller duct size will decrease your kitchen range hood’s efficiency by restricting the airflow as it travels through your ductwork. If you do not have existing ductwork in your kitchen, contact us to see how we can help.

 Step 2: Choose mounting type

Under Cabinet

Under cabinet range hoods are mounted to the bottom of the wall cabinet.

Wall Mount

Wall-mounted range hoods are attached above the stove to a wall without cabinets. There may be side cabinets on the wall but there cannot be any top cabinets.

Step 3: What size range hood should you get?

Under Cabinet Hoods

There are three key measurements for under cabinet range hood installation:

Range Hood Width: The most common widths are 30”and 36”. Over the stove vents should be the same width as the cabinets above the range.

Range Hood Height: The recommended mount height from the cooktop to the hood bottom should be between 24” and 30”. You can use this information to determine how tall your range hood should be to connect with your ductwork.
It's crucial to install the hood at the proper mounting height. Hoods mounted too low could result in heat damage and fire hazards. Conversely, when hoods are mounted too high, they will be hard to reach and lose their performance and efficiency.

Range Hood Depth: This refers to the depth of the wall cabinets above your range. A standard cabinet depth is typically 12”, which is conducive for installing all Pacific under cabinet range hoods. These days, however, some companies are making wall cabinets 15” deep, which could pose a problem for the TruSteam series by covering the range hood’s water inlet. If you have 15” deep wall cabinets and want to install a TruSteam range hood, you will need to install a 2.5” deep metal box (30” and 36” width available) behind the hood to avoid covering the water inlet.
