When selecting a range hood, consider the sone level, which measures noise level in appliances.  A low-sone, variable-speed model, enhances comfort during cooking with a low noise.

What are sones?

The sones gauge the loudness of a kitchen range hood's fan. Noise levels are often compared to everyday sounds, as shown in the adjacent chart.

Should I choose a range hood with the lowest sone level?

The desired sone level may vary.  Cooking methods and frequency impact your choice; for instance, high-heat, Asian stir fry or fried dishes require a more powerful, noisier fan.  For quieter cooking times, or conversing in the kitchen, a lower setting is sufficient. 

A range hood model with multiple adjustable speeds can provide more options in noise level and suction power.  Such models are effective at purifying air but remain exceptionally quiet on lower settings.
